UNMC doctor travels to Bangladesh for medical mission

Omaha, NE – A UNMC Cardiologist has returned to Omaha after a two and a half week medical mission to Bangladesh.

Dr. Edward O'Leary was part of the medical team that performed heart procedures, lectured and trained doctors. He says only about two to three percent of Bangladesh's citizens can afford medical care. A majority of people are poor and must sell their belongings to be able to pay for medical procedures.

Habitat for Humanity House named for Von Maur shooting victim

Omaha, NE – One of two new Habitat for Humanity houses going up in Council Bluffs is being built in memory of a Von Maur shooting victim.

The John McDonald Memorial Home is located at 1417 Avenue M in Council Bluffs. Habitat Council Bluffs Executive Director Gina Primmer says the idea came about when McDonald's family and friends donated to Habitat in his name. Primmer says that home, and another on Avenue C, will be finished in late April or early May.

Omaha, Blair colleges sign transfer agreement

Omaha, NE – Metropolitan Community College students who want to transfer to Dana College can do so without losing course credits.

Metro Interim President Randy Schmailzl and Dana College President Janet Phillip signed an articulation agreement Monday between the schools. The agreement means Metro students can continue their studies at Dana College and not have to worry about whether or not classes will transfer.

North Omaha coalition focuses on voter registration and education

Omaha, NE – The North Omaha Voter Participation Project is kicking off registration and voter education events ahead of the 2009 municipal election.

Omaha's Primary Election is April seventh. The Voter Participation Project plans to hold voter registration drives at North Omaha churches, restaurants, and community events. A project-sponsored Mayoral Forum is planned for April 14th at the Omaha Public Schools TAC building.

Royals official optimistic about move to Sarpy County

Omaha, NE – The Omaha Royals are one step closer toward a move to Sarpy County.

Sarpy County released a 60-page Stadium Lease and Use Agreement Thursday. Under the agreement, the Royals would begin playing minor league baseball in Sarpy County in 2011. The agreement is valid for 25 years.

Field of candidates set for 2009 City Primary election

Omaha, NE – The field of candidates for Omaha Mayor and City Council is set.

Five people are running for Omaha Mayor. Hal Daub, Jim Suttle, Jim Vokal, Randy William Brown and Mort Sullivan are all seeking that position. The Primary election is April seventh, with the General election May 12th.

All but one Omaha City Council seat is contested in this year's City election. The candidates are:

District One: Pete Festersen, Sharon Chvala

District Two: James Montgomery English, Ben Gray, Frank Brown, Cheryl Weston

Street restrictions continue following water main break

Omaha, NE – Drivers in Omaha can expect continued restrictions along Dodge Street near the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

One eastbound and one westbound lane are open at 62nd and Dodge Streets following a water main break Friday morning. That break shut off water service to UNO's Milo Bail Student Center for a few hours Friday and caused surface problems with Dodge Street.

NWS changing one criteria for issuance of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

Omaha, NE – The National Weather Service is changing one of the criteria that determines if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued.

Right now, one of those warnings is issued if a thunderstorm contains 58 mile-per-hour winds and three-quarter inch diameter hail. Starting April first, the hail criteria will change to one-inch diameter. The decision was made by the National Weather Service based on a multi-year study of hailstorms in Kansas. The NWS' Central Region offices, including Omaha, are making the change.
