Omaha's past and present coming to life on a downtown mural

Omaha, NE – Omaha's past and present are coming alive on a mural downtown. The project is called Fertile Ground and is scheduled for completion next summer.

Nationally-renowned artist Meg Saligman is painting the mural on the side of Omaha's Energy Systems building at 13th and Webster Streets. The mural will tell Omaha's story through its people and landmarks.

Jazz in June Festival

Eight part series continues Thursday night on KIOS.

Omaha, Nebraska – 2008 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Jazz in June Festival. The festival in Norman, Oklahoma is a highlight of the annual festival scene in the midwest. For the past few years, over 50,000 jazz fans have converged in Norman to enjoy the festival.

Nebraska and Iowa leaders planning an agriculture hearing in Omaha

Omaha, NE – Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson and Iowa Senator Tom Harkin plan to hold an agriculture hearing next month in Omaha.

During his weekly conference call Wednesday with reporters, Senator Nelson announced the agriculture hearing, set for August 18 in Omaha. Harkin is chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Hot weather settling in to Omaha area

Omaha, NE – Hot weather is settling in to the Omaha area. Temperatures the rest of this week are forecast to be at or above 90 degrees.

The Douglas County Health Department says you should avoid outdoor activities during hot weather if at all possible. If you must be outside, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. You should also limit outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours.

Salvation Army opens two cooling centers

Omaha, NE – Temperatures this week are forecast to remain at or above 90 degrees. With hot weather lingering in the Omaha metro area, the Salvation Army is opening two cooling stations.

A news release from the Salvation Army of Omaha says the cooling stations are located at 2424 Pratt Street and 4032 Harrison Street. At those locations, people can get cold drinks and snacks while escaping the hot temperatures.

The centers are open through Friday from eight AM to five PM.

Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey not seeking a third term

Omaha, NE – Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey says he's done a lot during his two terms in office but it's time for someone else to lead the city.

Fahey announced Tuesday morning that he won't seek a third term as Omaha's Mayor. That leaves the 2009 Mayoral race wide open.

National Veterans Wheelchair Games underway

Omaha, NE – More than 500 athletes are in Omaha for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

The Games began Friday and continue through Tuesday at Qwest Center Omaha, UNO, Northwest High School and other locations. Disabled military veterans from throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Great Britain are competing in 17 events, including basketball, swimming, softball, and track.

Events also include a Kids Day, where disabled children in Omaha will be mentored by the athletes and participate in events of their own.

An Interview with Connie Evingson

Jazz vocalist performed at Jazz on the Green Thursday.

Omaha, Nebraska – An evening of Hot Club music as interpreted by Connie Evingson can soothe the eardrums.

That was the case Thursday night when Evingson performed at Joslyn's Jazz on the Green series with the Clearwater Hot Club.

The night was nothing less than a miracle. For once, thunderstorms did not arrive to postpone or force a change of plans for the music.

Project Vote Smart bus tour rolls in to Omaha

Omaha, NE – An organization called Project Vote Smart is traveling the country to teach voters how to be better informed.

Project Vote Smart's web site, www.votesmart.org, contains information about 40,000 lawmakers. Voters can find a lawmaker's voting record, campaign finance records, issue positions, statements, and biography. Both state and federal lawmakers are included in Project Vote Smart's information.
