Benson and North High Students Headed to China for Robotics Competition

Three students and one teacher from Benson High Magnet School will be traveling overseas next month for a robotics competition.

Benson Principal Tom Wagner says the students double qualified for the contest.  He says not only did they win the regionals in Iowa and Nebraska, but they also won the Excellence Award for Best Robot.

Wagner says his students had a great year and they’re now capping it off with a nine-day trip to China, along with a team from North High School.

He says the students have a couple of days to play tourist before the competition starts.

"The great wall.  They’re going to see all the sights.  Things these kids wouldn’t have the opportunity to do if not for the opportunities they got here at Benson High.  The competition begin and it’s like worlds so they’ll compete internationally.  Our teacher seems to think we have a pretty good chance.  He seems to think since we are Midwest, we are probably overlooked.”

Wagner says the students will bring their winning robot to the competition in China where it will be put through a series of tasks.

Students leave on August 19th and return to Omaha August 28th.  Wagner says the Sherwood Foundation provided funding to get the kids to the competition.
