OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha-based health system has established a community garden to offer more access to healthy food for its patients in the city.
The Omaha World-Herald reports that CHI Health recently planted five raised garden beds with nonprofit City Sprouts at the Creighton University Medical Center campus. The $326,000 project will use the community garden to provide produce to CHI Health patients and to serve as a teaching site.
Audrey Matthews is CHI Health's healthier communities coordinator. She says the health system hopes to expand the garden and hire a community health worker to identify families facing food insecurity. The worker will make home visits, educate families about urban agriculture and help them plant gardens in their backyards.
Matthews says organizers will begin identifying families in South Omaha this fall.
