Creighton students compete to build the best app

Creighton students in business intelligence and analytics will compete this Friday to build the best app for mobile devices.

The students are in a Business Application Development course at Creighton. The competition challenges the students’ creativity and coding skills. About 30 students have been working on the apps all semester, and will present them Friday to a panel of judges.

Cindy Corritore teaches the Business Application Development class. She says while most of her students won’t go on to develop software as a career, all of them will learn critical business and technology skills.

"Probably one or two at the most out of 30 students will go on to create these kinds of software programs. And the rest of the students are business IT majors, and what they’ll do is they’ll use the knowledge of this as part of the more general knowledge of how technology works and can be used in the context of business."

The competition is called Argy Bargy—a British expression meaning a spirited debate. Teams of students will present their apps Friday at 12:30 in Creighton’s Harper Center Auditorium.

Last year’s winning apps included one that helped students find empty parking spots on campus, and one that would locate the nearest restroom. The apps are prototypes and not mobile device-ready.
