Creighton University named to list of environmentally responsible colleges

Creighton University has made a list of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S.

The Princeton Review’s annual guide to so-called “green” colleges includes Creighton. It’s the only school in Nebraska to make the list of 322 environmentally responsible universities. Mary Duda, Creighton’s Sustainability Program Manager, says Creighton made the list through a comprehensive review of its programs and facilities.

"We in Facilities Management have done a lot to upgrade our lighting, upgrade mechanical systems, that sort of thing, to be more energy efficient. As we replace things, they’re more energy efficient, and we’ve actually seen a decrease in the amount of energy we’re using over the past three or four years."

In 2010, Creighton built a solar and wind energy project on campus. The University also created a curriculum focused on technology and alternative energy. Duda says a Climate Action Plan is also being developed.
