Environmental study unveiled for Nebraska Keystone XL route

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The State Department is seeking public input on its draft study of the Keystone XL pipeline's environmental impact in Nebraska.

The announcement on Monday marks another step in pipeline developer TransCanada's quest to finish the Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline.

The Trump administration approved the project in March 2017, but environmentalists, Native American tribes and landowners in Nebraska have prevented the company from moving ahead with construction.

The new environmental study focuses on a route approved by Nebraska state regulators in November.

Opponents have challenged the decision to approve that route, and a lawsuit is pending before the Nebraska Supreme Court. Oral arguments in that case aren't expected until October at the earliest.

The State Department says it will take public comments through Aug. 29.
