An Interview With Catherine Russell

Jazz vocalist Catherine Russell will perform with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra on Friday, December 2nd at the Holland Performing Arts Center. The concert, "Big Band Holidays", will be a show of holiday favorites  for jazz fans to enjoy.

Catherine Russell is an acclaimed vocalist with six albums to her credit.  Her latest recording, Harlem On My Mind, is a brilliant performance of vintage jazz gems.

Russell grew up in a household of accomplished jazz artists. Her dad, Luis Russell was a music director for the great Louis Armstrong. And her mom, Carline Ray, was a guitarist, bassist and singer who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and Mary Lou Williams.

The vocalist has performed at jazz and music festivals worldwide, and at the Carnegie Hall and the Jazz Standard in New York. She has performed with saxophonist Andy Farber and his 18-piece After Midnight Orchestra.  Russell was also a backup vocalist for David Bowie in his band from 2002-2004, in addition to working as a vocalist with Paul Simon and Steely Dan.

In a wide-ranging interview, Russell discussed her latest recording, Harlem on My Mind, in addition to her work with David Bowie and her appreciation of vintage jazz music.
