An Interview with Kurt Elling

Celebrated GRAMMY®  winning Jazz vocalist Kurt Elling will perform at the Holland Performing Arts Center this week. Two presentations of "Elling Swings Sinatra" will take place at the 1200 Club at the Holland Center at 7:30 & 9:30 PM on Thursday, April 23rd.

GRAMMY® winner Kurt Elling is among the world's foremost jazz vocalists. Since emerging on the scene in the 1990s, Elling has won every DownBeat Critics Poll for the last fourteen years and has been named "Male Singer of the Year" by the Jazz Journalists Association eight times in that same time span. In fact, every one the jazz vocalist's ten albums has been nominated for a GRAMMY®.  A new recording is set for a summer, 2015 release.

With Elling Swings Sinatra, Kurt Elling pays homage to the legendary male vocalist of the 20th century in celebration of Sinatra’s centenary. Elling brings his own immense stage talents and vocal abilities to the forefront in this presentation of Sinatra’s vast repertoire. In the performance, reinterpretations of classic hits such as “Come Fly With Me,” “In the Still of the Night” and “April in Paris”, along with other memorable gems, will be shared with the audience.

In a recent conversation, Jazz in the Afternoon host Chris Cooke spoke with Kurt Elling via phone. Elling spoke about his program which salutes Frank Sinatra as well as his own work as one of today's most in demand jazz vocalists.

Chris Cooke has been a voice on radio in Omaha since 1988. While at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he studied radio broadcasting, history and religion. Working at KVNO-FM, Cooke hosted a weekend adventuresome jazz show on the station in addition to duties as an on-air announcer on overnights, weekends and holidays. He also worked at KBLZ (the then student-run radio station) as well as KYNE-TV, and The Gateway as a reporter.
In November 1992, Cooke signed on at KIOS-FM and has been there ever since. He has hosted the Tuesday and Thursday editions of Jazz in the Afternoon since 1996 and has also hosted Last Call since that year. A long time fan of jazz music, Cooke enjoys talking with the musicians who make jazz music. He has interviewed Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, David Liebman, Airto Moreira, Jessica Williams and Karrin Allyson, to name a few. While not at the station Cooke maintains a web design consultancy business that has served a number of non-profit and music clients for over 20 years.
