The National Association of Women in Construction’s Education Foundation is offering its annual Block Kids Contest this Saturday.

Ashley Meirose is the Treasurer of the Omaha chapter of NAWIC.  She says the competition is for kids in Kindergarten through sixth grade.

Each participant will have 100 Legos that they will use to build something construction-related such as a building, bridge or power plant.

Meirose says NAWIC will award prizes to the winners in each age category as well as the overall winner.

She says it’s never too early to start teaching kids about potential careers in the construction industry.

"These kids are very creative. Last year’s winner built a bridge over a town and then on this bridge was a train that transported not only people, but materials from one side of the town to the other.  And then with that train, it produced energy to help power the town.”

Meirose says the contest begins at 10 a.m. and takes place at Metro Community College’s South Campus.

The contest is limited to 100 participants and there are about 25 spots left.

All entries will be judged by industry experts.  Registration information is available by emailing NAWICOMAHA@gmail.com.
