Nebraska GenCyber is underway this week

Nebraska GenCyber is a free two-week camp focused on cybersecurity.  The camp runs this week with a focus on middle school and high school teachers.  Next week’s sessions will center on 9th and 10th grade students.

Doug Rausch, assistant professor at Bellevue University and Director of CyberSecurity program, says the camp is funded by a grant through the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation.

He says GenCyber is a national program that offers students fun, hands-on activities to interest students in careers in computing and cybersecurity.

"We have the kids program drones.  We take a look at building their own Internet of Thing devices out of raspberry pie computers (computers about the size of a deck of playing cards).  And they will program drones to fly through an obstacle course.  And we take a look at Wi-Fi vulnerabilities and how those vulnerabilities can be exploited or what we can do to fix those problems so networks are secure.”

Rausch says teachers experience the same activities, but also receive support developing cybersecurity curricula for use in their classrooms.

This week’s teacher-focused camp takes place at UNO while the student camp will be held at Bellevue University.

Spots are still available for students who are interested.  For more information, the website is nebraskagencyber.com.
