Postal customers will have an easy way to help their neighbors-in-need this Saturday.
The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 5 and members of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association will collect donations of nonperishable food from mail customers across the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro.
The drive will help replenish local food pantries.
"For the last 24 years, every second Saturday in May, we have a nationwide food drive. So, across the country, we’re asking customers to place nonperishable food items beside their mailbox so that we can pick them up along with delivering their mail,” says Andrea Malena with the U.S. Postal Service.
She says customers should use the special food donation bag delivered by letter carriers this week.
"Seems like macaroni and cheese and peanut butter are always a staple that the pantries are always in need of. And we ask that they not put glass jars in the bags, just because we don’t want the jars to break."
Last year, the drive generated over 244,000 pounds of food.
