No proposed tax increase in Omaha's 2013 budget

Omaha’s 2013 budget proposal contains no property tax increase, and estimates sales tax revenue will grow 1 to 3 percent.

Mayor Jim Suttle introduced the 2013 budget at Tuesday's City Council meeting. The general fund budget is $319.8 million, a 2.76 percent increase over the 2012 spending plan. Most of the growth in the 2013 plan is due to Omaha Public Works’ budget.

The budget plan accounts for 1.75 percent raises for police, fire, and civilian personnel in 2013. It also includes a police department recruit class.

Mayor Jim Suttle to present Omaha's 2013 budget Tuesday

Annexation and budgets are on Tuesday's Omaha City Council agenda.

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle is set to give his 2013 budget presentation to the City Council. No details are available at this point about the new budget. A public hearing will be held in August.

Councilmen will also vote on annexing eight Sanitary Improvement Districts in to the city of Omaha. If that’s approved, the city of Omaha will grow by 6,353 residents.

The Omaha City Council meets at 2pm Tuesday.

Report calls for reform of Nebraska's tax system

An economic analysis group says Nebraska lawmakers need to explore changes to the state’s tax policy.

The Open Sky Policy Institute released a report Thursday morning on Nebraska’s budget and tax policy. Executive Director Renee Fry says state government needs to look at reforming the tax code, as well as expanding what goods and services are taxed.

Douglas County Board to vote Tuesday on 2012-13 budget

The Douglas County Board is scheduled to vote Tuesday morning on a $325 million 2012-13 budget.

The county’s new budget year began July first. The budget contains no property tax increase. It's a three-point-two percent larger overall budget than last year's.

Commissioners will also hold a public hearing on a plan to merge the Register of Deeds and Assessors’ offices.

The county board meets at 9am Tuesday.

Campaign seeks to find Omaha's unique attractions, events

The Omaha Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to hear what places are most popular with residents and tourists.

Through the end of this month, the CVB is accepting videos for what’s called the “Welcome to the Weekend” campaign. Spokeswoman Deb Ward says the goal is to get the community involved in promoting Omaha’s attractions.
