The Douglas County Election Commission expects a good turnout

Polls are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. today. 

Today is Nebraska’s Primary Election and Dave Phipps, Douglas County Election Commissioner, says they predict a turnout of 21%.  He says that would be about 66,500 people voting, with early ballots and votes cast today. 

Phipps says he doesn’t expect voters to have many issues with the new polling places.  He says the election commission sent cards in March advising people of their polling places.  Phipps says the election commission has been busy with a higher than usual rate of early votes.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney talks jobs, economy, health care at Omaha rally

GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks to a crowd of supporters Thursday in Omaha.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney says the Keystone XL pipeline project should be built. 

Romney spoke at a campaign rally Thursday afternoon in Omaha. The rally comes five days before Nebraska’s primary election. During his ten-minute speech to an overflow crowd, Romney talked about jobs, health care, and domestic sources of energy. He says all sources of power should be considered, including the Keystone XL pipeline.

Non-Partisan Voter's Guide now available

The League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha is offering a non-partisan guide for metro area voters who want more information before they cast a ballot next Tuesday.  The voter’s guide has information on candidates running for races in Douglas County. 

Bev Traub, current president for the League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha, says the guide is meant to assist voters in gaining a more complete view of the candidates who are running for office.  She says not all candidates are equally familiar to the public.

GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney coming to Omaha Thursday

Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney comes to Omaha Thursday for a fundraiser and rally.

 

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will campaign Thursday in Omaha.

A news release from Romney’s campaign says the former Massachusetts Governor will speak Thursday afternoon at a rally at Rick’s Café Boatyard. The stop comes five days before Nebraska’s primary election.

In 2008, President Obama won the electoral vote tied to Nebraska’s Second Congressional District. Senator John McCain won Nebraska’s First and Third Congressional District votes.

Some of Douglas County's 179 closed polling places to reopen

The Douglas County Election Commission will reopen some of the 179 polling places closed prior to this year’s primary election.

Election Commissioner Dave Phipps says the polling places will reopen before the November general election. How many polling places will reopen has yet to be determined. Primary election turnout, along with general election results from the past two presidential elections, will determine which polling places reopen.

Second Congressional District GOP candidates debate federal deficit, health care, tax code

The federal deficit was on the minds of the GOP candidates for Nebraska’s Second Congressional District at a debate Friday. The Omaha Press Club and League of Women Voters sponsored the debate.

Incumbent Congressman Lee Terry has three challengers. One is financial advisor Brett Lindstrom. UNO mathematics professor Jack Heidel and former Douglas County Republican Party Chairman Glenn Freeman are also running for Congress.
