Salvation Army opening three cooling centers Saturday morning

The Salvation Army of Omaha plans to have three cooling centers open this weekend as temperatures soar in to the upper 90s.

Salvation Army officials announced Friday that the Kroc Center, North Corps, and Lied Renaissance Center will be open Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm.

Those three locations will be open from 8am to 8pm as cooling centers Monday through Friday next week.

The National Weather Service expects a high temperature around 95 Saturday and 97 Sunday.

Corps of Engineers: runoff from six Missouri River dams to remain below normal

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says runoff from the six dams that feed the Missouri River will be below normal the rest of the year.

In a news release, Corps officials say the July runoff forecast shows below-normal runoff for the rest of 2012. It’s at 87-percent of normal north of Sioux City.

Jody Farhat, chief of the Omaha District’s Water Management Division, says the lower runoff means normal operating conditions. It won’t affect the navigation season, which ends November 24th at Omaha.

Creighton economist expects weaker economic growth for the rest of 2012

A monthly indicator of economic health in nine Midwest and Plains states dropped in June.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss compiles the Mid-America Business Conditions Report. The index dropped to 57.2 in June, down four-tenths of a point from the May report. It’s the second month in a row the index has dropped.

Boswell, Latham open campaign offices in Council Bluffs

The candidates for Iowa’s Third Congressional District are reaching out to voters in Council Bluffs.

 

Republican Tom Latham opened his Council Bluffs campaign office Friday afternoon. Iowa’s Fifth Congressional District was eliminated after the 2010 Census and redistricting. Voters in Pottawattamie and Mills counties are now in the Third District.
