Omaha Police investigating a carjacking at UNO

Omaha Police are investigating a carjacking Thursday night on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus.

The incident happened just after 7 PM Thursday. Police say the victim, 57-year-old Barbara Simcoe, was in her vehicle and had the door open. The suspect allegedly approached her vehicle, displayed a knife, and told her to get out of the car. Police say the suspect pulled Simcoe from her car and took off in the vehicle, a white 2000 Subaru Legacy Wagon.

Simcoe is an associate professor of art and art history at UNO.

Study shows $729 million economic impact from Midtown Crossing development

A new study shows Omaha’s Midtown Crossing generated more than $26 million dollars in tax revenue for the city and state over the past five years, with an overall economic impact of $729 million during that time.

U.S. Olympic Swim Trials return to Omaha in June

The U.S. Olympic Swim Trials return to Omaha in late June.

Omaha hosted the Swim Trials in 2008. It’s the biggest competition before the Olympics, which are in London this year. Frank Busch, national team director for USA Swimming, says so far this year 1,600 athletes have met qualifying standards. 1,100 athletes came to Omaha in 2008 for the Trials.

Busch says Omaha was a perfect location in 2008 for the Swim Trials. The CenturyLink Center arena and convention halls were converted to accommodate the Swim Trials, complete with practice pools.

Task Force to study use of illegal guns in Omaha crimes

 

A task force of city officials, law enforcement, and private citizens will study additional ways Omaha can get illegal guns off the streets.

 

More than 800 illegal guns were taken off Omaha’s streets last year. The city ended 2011 with 37 homicides, and has recorded eight homicides so far this year.
