Fuel prices on the way down, but maybe not for long

Gas prices are down in the Omaha metro, in time for holiday travel.

The website gasbuddy.com, which tracks fuel prices in both Omaha and statewide, says the price of gas is down five-cents a gallon over the past week. It averages $3.31 a gallon. Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan says the decline is due in part to refineries resuming production.

"What brought this relief is just the fact that refineries have gotten back online after some earlier problems, production of gasoline has increased and certainly that has helped put downward pressure on gas prices."

DeHaan says the national average is $3.50 a gallon. He expects fuel prices will rise again over the next couple of weeks due to an increase in the price of crude oil.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in Lincoln is $3.44 a gallon.
