Not many surprises in Nebraska primary

Donald Trump won the Nebraska primary last night with 60% of the vote.

Retired Brigadier General Don Bacon won the GOP nomination last night, beating Chip Maxwell, a former Nebraska state lawmaker and Douglas County commissioner.  Bacon will face Democratic US Representative Brad Ashford this November for the 2nd congressional district seat.

Dr. Randall Adkins is a Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences at UNO.

Regarding the presidential race, Adkins says the first thing that stands out is in spite of coming in second in the caucuses to Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton ended up winning the primary.

"And I think what that shows us is the differences between primaries and caucuses.  Caucuses tend to be low voter turnout events where you see very high participation among people who are strong supporters and primaries tend to be events that generate broader support because people can show up at any time of the day to vote and you tend to get the more moderate voters who show up then.”

Adkins says neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton have the majority of delegates they need to actually win at their conventions so that has to be their first goal.

He says their second goal will have to be uniting their respective parties behind them.  Adkins says there have been tough battles on both sides as well as some divisive primaries this year.

And on the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders is still in the race.
