NBC cameraman with Ebola to be treated at Nebraska Medical Center

A 33-year-old cameraman for NBC who contracted Ebola in Liberia will be treated at Nebraska Medical Center.

Ashoka Mukpo tested positive Thursday for Ebola. Nebraska Medical Center officials say they received word Friday from the State Department that a second patient will be brought to the hospital’s biocontainment unit for treatment. He’s scheduled to arrive Monday morning.

In a statement, biocontainment unit director Dr. Phil Smith says the hospital is “ready, willing, and able to care for this patient.”

Mukpo will be the second American to be treated at NMC’s biocontainment unit. Dr. Rick Sacra, a family physician from Massachusetts, spent nearly three weeks in the unit after he also contracted Ebola in Liberia. Sacra was released last week.

NMC’s biocontainment unit is one of four in the U.S. The others are in Montana, Maryland, and Georgia.
