Death Penalty Repeal Bill Fails On First Vote

Another attempt to once-again repeal the death penalty in Nebraska is falling short.  Debate at the Nebraska State Capitol focused on whether LB 44 ignored the will of Nebraska voters, who voted to overturn the Legislature's repeal of the death penalty in 2016.  Senator Ernie Chambers, who is well-known for his fight against capital punishment, was the bill's sponsor, which failed on a first-round vote of 25-to-17.  Seven senators abstained from voting.
