Authorities identify Omaha man shot during confrontation with deputies

Authorities have identified a man who allegedly pulled a gun and shot at a sheriff's deputy Tuesday morning before being shot by another.

The shooting happened at a convenience store at 156th and Blondo Streets about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities say a clerk told a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy who'd walked in that 32-year-old Taylor Culbertson seemed drunk. The deputy called for backup and confronted Culbertson when he went outside.

Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning says Culbertson pulled a gun and fired at the deputy once and then his gun jammed. Dunning says another deputy who'd arrived then shot Culbertson more than one time.

Culbertson was taken in critical condition to an Omaha hospital. An update on his condition has not been released.

The deputies weren't injured and are on administrative leave.

Dunning says the Sheriff’s Department put out a warning about Culbertson a couple of weeks ago after he threatened to shoot police if they pulled him over or came to his home.
