BBB warns of text message phishing scam

If you get a text message saying you could win a $1000 gift card from Target, delete it: it’s a scam.

Jim Hegarty, President of the Better Business Bureau of the Nebraska, South Dakota, southwest Iowa, and Kansas Plains region, says tens of thousands of people have received text messages saying they could win the gift card by visiting a website and entering an access code.

Hegarty says the web site requires consumers to enter personal information. Once the information is complete, there’s no gift card, and consumers will be flooded with offers from companies who now have their information.

Similar scams circulated earlier this year saying consumers could get WalMart or Best Buy gift cards the same way.

Hegarty expects to see more of these types of scams as the holiday shopping season approaches.
