College Possible attends White House event

A program providing supports for college-bound low-income students is continuing to expand.

College Possible Founder and CEO Jim McCorkle recently spoke about the program during the White House College Opportunity Day of Action in Washington DC.

During these events, the White House asks everyone to make commitments to help more low income kids get to college and graduate.

McCorkle said College Possible’s first promise was to expand to Philadelphia, and they’ve done that.  At the latest event, he said new pledges were made.

"We committed to significantly increasing the number of students we serve in the cities where we are already operating.  And then also we plan to go from five cities to ten cities by 2020.  That was our commitment which is something we are really excited about because there are thousands of kids in communities all across the country that need our help. We are excited to be a part of the solution for those kids.”

McCorkle says College Possible is a model for what happens when you make college a possibility for low income kids.

In Omaha, more than 600 high school students at eight schools are in the College Possible program. More than three-fourths of them will be the first in their family to attend college.
