Community building, plaza, water features part of Council Bluffs park expansion

Construction is scheduled to begin next spring on phase two of Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park in Council Bluffs.

The Council Bluffs City Council approved the $7 million project Monday. Mayor Matt Walsh says phase two is a smaller, three-acre park with interactive features, a patio setting, and a community room.

Other items planned for phase two are a plaza, water features, and play elements for children. Walsh says it'll be a transition between a mixed-use development in Playland Park and the larger River's Edge Park, which hosts Loessfest and other major events.

The work is expected to be complete in mid-2017.

Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park sits along the Missouri River, on the Council Bluffs Side of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.
