County planning board approves proposed chicken farm

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A proposal for a giant chicken farm has been advanced by the Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission.

The commission voted 6-3 Wednesday to approve a special permit for Randy Essink. He plans to build four barns in southwest Lancaster County that would hold a total of 190,000 chickens. His intended customer: the Costco processing plant in Fremont.

Two previous commission meetings didn't produce the required five votes for or against the proposed operation, which has been opposed by several area residents.

Commissioner Dennis Scheer and Maja Harris voted for the plan but also said the issue deserves more discussion, and Scheer encouraged the plan's opponents to appeal the commission's decision. He says the issue "needs to be debated and decided by elected officials."
