Dead Bodies the Focus of the Next Omaha Science Cafe

The next Omaha Science Caféfocuses on what happens to the body once people die.

Dr. Geoffrey Talmon, an associate professor in the department of pathology and microbiology at UNMC, will talk about embalming methods, the changes that occur within the body after death and why.

Talmon says he will tie that information together with examples from movies and real-life, dispelling some myths in the process.

He says he loves his job because he uses everything he learned in college, medical school and residency, every single day.

"There’s never a dull moment.  There’s always something really cool to see, either through patients that we are taking care of or patients who have died and we are examining them after they’ve died to figure out what was going on with them.  It’s always something where I have to crack a book.  I’ve got to learn.  And that’s what I love about my job.”

Talmon says his presentation is for anyone who enjoys horror movies or crime TV or for those who are interested in learning a little more about a different part of the changes we go through as human beings.

He says he will also talk about why people shouldn’t be afraid of zombies or mummies. The Science Café takes place at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 14th at the Slowdown.
