Douglas County Treasurer to Headline MLK Event

Douglas County Treasurer, John Ewing, Jr. is the guest speaker for UNMC’s Martin Luther King Day event.

Ewing was elected in 2006 and is responsible for the collection of more than $1.7 billion in taxes.

Ewing is an advocate for crimes victims and worked to develop legislation that more effectively addressed crimes committed against women and children.

Monday’s speech is called “Are You Living the Dream?”

He says it’s important to celebrate the work that Dr. Martin Luther King did during his lifetime.

Ewing says everyone needs to continue to live the dream each day and make sure they are doing their part to continue the great work.

"Especially as you look at how diverse our nation is becoming and how interconnected we are, not only in this country, but around the world and how small the world really is today versus maybe a decade ago.”

Ewing speaks at Noon on Monday, January 21st in the lower level of the Storz Pavilion in Clarkson Tower.

Also on Monday, the city of Omaha is offering a citywide celebration featuring a variety of events.  The theme of the celebration is “Now is the Time.”
