Gov. Ricketts wants changes to Nebraska's tax structure, more roads funding

Governor Pete Ricketts wants Nebraska lawmakers to act on tax reform and transportation issues this legislative session.Ricketts gave his State of the State address Thursday morning. The Governor says he wants structural changes made to Nebraska’s property tax system this session, calling it his top priority.

Ricketts also reiterated his support for a transportation infrastructure bank.

"Our businesses transport goods and services. Our farmers and ranchers feed our world on our roads and bridges. We get to work each day on our highways. We drive our children to school across our county bridges. Let’s help our local leaders keep and attract business."

Ricketts says Nebraska faces budget issues, and revenue forecasts have been revised downward. A recent report estimated Nebraska has a $110 million budget deficit. He urged lawmakers to find ways to fix the shortfall without taking money from the state’s cash reserve.

The second year of the biennium is a short session, with lawmakers scheduled to adjourn April 20th.
