Heavy rains fall on western Iowa, eastern Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An overnight storm dropped more than 5 inches of rain on eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, causing street flooding and forcing some schools to close for the day.

The National Weather Service says between 5 inches and 8 inches of rain fell on parts of Omaha and Council Bluffs by midmorning Wednesday.

The flooding left several streets in both cities impassable, including parts of downtown Council Bluffs. Several cars that drove into flooded streets became stranded after the floodwaters caused them to stall.

The Council Bluffs and St. Albert Catholic school districts both cancelled classes Wednesday because of concerns about road conditions.

More than 4,000 people lost power during the storm, but utilities had restored service to most customers by 10 a.m. Wednesday.
