Hot Weather Safety Tips

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services reminds people to be careful during hot weather by taking some safety precautions.

Staying cool, keeping hydrated and moderating outdoor activities when temperatures soar well above 90 can help individuals decrease the potential for heat-related illness.

Leah Bucco-White, Communications Director for DHHS, says it’s important to stay informed and check your local news for heat advisories, alerts and safety tips.

Bucco-White says though electric fans may provide some comfort during a heat wave, once the temperatures surpass 90 degrees, fans won’t prevent heat-related illness.

She says taking a cool shower or moving to an air-conditioned place will both help.

"Stay cool.  Wear loose, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.  If you’re outdoors, slow your pace and take frequent rest breaks.  Keep hydrated.  Drink plenty of water and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.  Avoid alcohol and limit drinks with caffeine.  Remember others.  Check on elderly friends and neighbors to make sure they’re staying cool and hydrated.”

Bucco-White says you should also never leave children or pets in a parked car.

The Salvation Army will have its four cooling centers open daily while the temperatures are above 90.  To find the location nearest you, the phone number is 402-898-7700.
