Husker women's volleyball team celebrates national championship

Greg Echlin

Basketball takes over again at CenturyLink Center tonight, but the arena was the epicenter of women’s volleyball over the weekend.  As Omaha Public Radio’s Greg Echlin reports, the price of admission turned out to be well worth it for Husker fans.

To put it simply, CenturyLink rocked.  Huskers setter Kelly Hunter from Papillion-La Vista South says the noise level was almost deafening.

“There was one point—I don’t know when it was—Amy Neal was back to serve.  I think we had game point,” said Hunter.  “I can’t remember who said it, but they said, ‘I think my eardrums are going to pop.’”

Each session, the semifinals last Thursday and the title match on Saturday, set an NCAA record for attendance.  With the Huskers in it, Hunter says she was getting the word on hefty bids for tickets.

“I heard 300 something.  450?  You heard a thousand?” asked Hunter.  “Wow, they love us, I guess.”

The Huskers paid it off with their fourth national championship in women’s volleyball after beating Texas in straight sets.
