Iowan accused of using racial slur, spraying diesel on man

PERCIVAL, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a western Iowa resident was charged with assault after using racial slurs and spraying diesel fuel on a man at a convenience store.

Court records say the incident occurred near Percival on Dec. 16. The Fremont County Sheriff's Office says a black man from Jonesboro, Arkansas, was parked at the pumps when the white Iowa man approached him and began arguing. The Iowan left after spraying the fuel.

The Daily Nonpareil reports (http://bit.ly/1S3RlJB ) that the suspect is 62-year-old John Moyer, of Hamburg. Court records say he's charged with assault causing injury or mental illness in violation of individual rights. Moyer declined to comment to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 21.
