Jazz CD of The Month: Chick Corea / Eddie Gomez / Paul Motian / Further Explorations / Concord

Another one of those live recordings that lets you feel that you are there.  Further Explorations is a 2 CD celebration of the music of Bill Evans with two of the former band mates of Evans on stage. There's Eddie Gomez, the legendary bassist who was with the Bill Evans trio for eleven years, 1966-1977.  Paul Motian is also on the stage, one of the most influential jazz drummers of the last 50 years who was with Evans from 1959 through 1964 .  Chick Corea, one of the most dynamic and creative pianists in all of jazz since Evans, joins Gomez and Motian. Selections for the 2 Cd set were recorded at the Blue Note in New York City in May of 2010.  Together this trio presents a brilliant program that does not disappoint.  "Alice in Wonderland" features a wonderful intro by bassist Eddie Gomez.gom The trio presents a percolating version  of "Hot House" then switch gears into the unpredictable twists and turns of "Mode VI" where Motian's legendary talent help add to the swirl of sound.  Sadly this recording was probably one the last for Motian who passed away in late 2011. It is a tremendous musical statement to remember him, and the compositional legacy of Bill Evans, by.

Chris Cooke has been a voice on radio in Omaha since 1988. While at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he studied radio broadcasting, history and religion. Working at KVNO-FM, Cooke hosted a weekend adventuresome jazz show on the station in addition to duties as an on-air announcer on overnights, weekends and holidays. He also worked at KBLZ (the then student-run radio station) as well as KYNE-TV, and The Gateway as a reporter.
In November 1992, Cooke signed on at KIOS-FM and has been there ever since. He has hosted the Tuesday and Thursday editions of Jazz in the Afternoon since 1996 and has also hosted Last Call since that year. A long time fan of jazz music, Cooke enjoys talking with the musicians who make jazz music. He has interviewed Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, David Liebman, Airto Moreira, Jessica Williams and Karrin Allyson, to name a few. While not at the station Cooke maintains a web design consultancy business that has served a number of non-profit and music clients for over 20 years.
