Jazz on Stage series returns this weekend

Dan Mattran Quintet to launch 2006-7 seasonBy Chris Cooke

Omaha, Nebraska – The Jazz on Stage series returns this weekend.
An annual music series running September through May at the Grand Olde Players Theatre, some of the best local jazz musicians entertain appreciative audiences on this Northwest Omaha stage.
Sunday, the Dan Mattran Quintet opens the Jazz on Stage Series. The performance will feature Mattran?s versatile style on the trumpet including several standards as well as many of his original compositions.
Danny Mattran has taught music, orchestra and band in the Omaha Public Schools and conducted private trumpet lessons for over twenty years. As a freelance artist, he has performed all styles of music with local talent such as Luigi Waites, Robert Glaser and the Resurrected Swing. His music has been heard at numerous venues around the Omaha Metropolitan and Lincoln areas including broadcasts of Jazz One TV. Mattran also serves as assistant director and staff musician for the Cathedral Arts Project (CAP) Jazz Workshop each March. This program allows aspiring musicians from age 8 to 80 a chance to experience playing jazz with others under the guidance of professionals.
The September 10 performance of the Dan Mattran Quintet begins at 6pm at the Grande Olde Players Theatre, located at 2339 North 90th Street. There is an open jam session in the lobby one hour before the main performance, allowing the students of music as well as the pros the opportunity to jam together and exchange musical ideas. Admission is free to the Dan Mattran Quintet concert and the jam session.

Chris Cooke is the host of Jazz in the Afternoon and Last Call on KIOS-FM.
