Last Call CD Spotlight: Marc Cary/Rhodes Ahead Vol. 2 / Motema

One of the most enjoyable recordings of 2015 has to be without doubt the new recording from veteran keyboardist Marc Cary.

Rhodes Ahead Vol. 2 is a stimulating kaleidoscope of hypnotic grooves. Eleven tracks await the listener in a program that is hard to resist.  From the energetic take on "Beehive" Cary and his band announce their intentions for a thoroughly groovy session--and they deliver. "7th Avenue North" delivers a mellow groove which is nicely contrasted by the vibrant pulse of "Essaouira Walks". The hypnotic mood of "Astral Flight 17" is given contrast by the tension of "Spices and Mystics".

Marc Cary, on Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3 and other keyboards is joined by Tarus Mateen on bass; Terreon "Tank" Gully on drums; with special guests including Sameer Gupta on tabla; Igmar Thomas on trumpet; Arun Ramamurthy on violin, and others.

Marc Cary was born in New York City in 1967. He gained his initial experience as a jazz musician while growing up in Washington, DC, where he was a drummer and trumpeter before switching to Fender Rhodes. After moving to New York City in 1989, Cary hooked up with Betty Carter and went on tour in Europe with the jazz vocalist. The keyboardist has also worked with some of the greats in jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Art Taylor, Roy Hargrove and Carmen McRae. Additionally, Cary had a stint with the legendary jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln for 12 years.

If you are a fan of Herbie Hancock's 1970s cosmic jazz/funk recordings, Cary's new disc will certainly satisfy your tastes for a fender rhodes piloted trip into electronic music, jazz and funk .
