Last Call Review: Chris Pasin/Ornettiquette/Planet Arts

Trumpeter Chris Pasin and his Ornettiquette band create a thrilling experience for the adventuresome listener on Ornettiquette. The disc is largely a tribute to legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman and his longtime associate, trumpeter Don Cherry. And what a tribute it is.

Selections by Coleman performed include "Jayne", "When Will The Blues Leave", "Lonely Woman" and "Tomorrow Is The Question". The band also covers an Albert Ayler line, "Ghosts", with tremendous inspiration. Pasin also presents two originals, "OCDC" and "PTU".

Trumpeter Chris Pasin leads the impressive band of Karl Berger on the vibes and piano; Ingrid Sertso, vocals;(both Berger and Sertso have performed with Coleman and Cherry) plus Adam Siegel, alto saxophone; Michael Bisio, bass and Harvey Sorgen on drums.

In a career that has included work with Buddy Rich, Jaki Byard, Mel Torme, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and many other luminaries, Chris Pasin presents a band that brings Coleman's legendary music to life, while in an accessible style that commands immediate attention. This writer has enjoyed repeated listening to these truly captivating performances. Highly recommended!

He also worked at KBLZ (the then student-run radio station) as well as KYNE-TV, and The Gateway as a reporter.
In November 1992, Cooke signed on at KIOS-FM and has been there ever since. He has hosted the Tuesday and Thursday editions of Jazz in the Afternoon since 1996 and has also hosted Last Call since that year. A long time fan of jazz music, Cooke enjoys talking with the musicians who make jazz music. He has interviewed Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, David Liebman, Airto Moreira, Jessica Williams and Karrin Allyson, to name a few. While not at the station Cooke maintains a web design consultancy business that has served a number of non-profit and music clients for over 20 years.
