LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Someone in Dodge, Saunders or Washington counties was diagnosed with the state's first confirmed case of West Nile virus for 2016.
The Nebraska Health and Human Services Department said Thursday that the case was reported in the Three Rivers Health Department area, which covers the three counties. The person was not hospitalized.
Experts say most people who are infected have no symptoms or experience only mild, flu-like symptoms. The most vulnerable people are those who are at least 50 or have weakened immune systems.
Nebraska reported 68 human cases of West Nile virus and two deaths last year. In 2014 eight deaths were blamed on West Nile virus.
