New information released on Iowa's proposed health insurance marketplace

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Newly released rate information on Iowa's health care marketplace shows the state will offer some of the lowest premiums in the country.

The Iowa Insurance Division released numbers Friday that back up remarks by Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart earlier this month on the relatively low premiums for the marketplace.

Three age-specific applicants are used in the sample information to show Iowans their options for the marketplace, also known as an exchange. Four carriers will sell individual plans, though coverage varies by location.

The Des Moines Register reports Iowa residents already pay some of the lowest health insurance premiums in the country.

States must have a health care exchange under the new Affordable Care Act. Enrollment starts October 1st and coverage begins on January 1st.
