NMC officials optimistic American doctor with Ebola will make full recovery

An American doctor being treated at Nebraska Medical Center after contracting Ebola is expected to make a full recovery.

Dr. Rick Sacra has been at NMC’sbiocontainment unit since September 5th. He was working in the obstetrics unit of a hospital in Liberia when he contracted Ebola.

In a news release, NMC officials say they’re optimistic Sacra will make a full recovery. Doctors are still cautious about his condition because of the severity of Ebola.

Blood tests sent to the CDC showed decreasing amounts of the virus in his blood over a five-day period. Dr. Sacra received an experimental drug for seven days.

In order to be released from the hospital, Sacra must have two negative blood tests 24 hours apart.

More than 2,400 people have died in the current outbreak of Ebola in west Africa.
