A solemn ceremony at Omaha’s Memorial Park Friday morning marked the 14th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.

The First Responders Foundation hosted the second annual Minute of Silence ceremony. It paid tribute to the 2,977 victims of the 2001 terror attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. 403 first responders also died.

Omaha Fire Chief Bernie Kanger says more than two dozen firefighters have served in the Armed Forces since the 2001 attacks.

Governor Pete Ricketts paid tribute to the victims, and urged everyone to remember the role of first responders.

“When you see one of them, tell them thank you. Thank you for taking time away from your families. Thank you for the sacrifices you make to keep us safe in our communities. Thank you for being the ones who rush in to the building when we are all rushing out.”

A flag was placed in Memorial Park in remembrance of each victim of the terror attacks. A citywide minute of silence was observed at 9:11 am.

Bellevue will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 6 pm at American Heroes Park, near the Missouri River Bridge. Offutt Air Force Base and the city of Papillion also held remembrance ceremonies Friday.
