Omaha Fire Chief Bernard Kanger plans to retire in May.
A news release from Mayor Jean Stothert’s office says Kanger notified them Tuesday of his retirement, effective May 6. Kanger is a 25 year veteran of the Omaha Fire Department.
Mayor Stothert plans to name an interim Fire Chief prior to Kanger’s retirement. A national search will be conducted for a new fire department leader.
In a statement, the Omaha Professional Fire Fighters Association thanked Kanger for his service to the department, and the community for its support.
Kanger became Omaha Fire Chief in May 2014.
