Plans to build one of two new high school in Omaha moved forward Tuesday night

Omaha Public Schools and the YMCA plan to work together to do something they've never done in the Omaha area.  The YMCA and the new high school on 156th and Ida will be a shared facility, meaning the school would be connected to all of the YMCA's programs.

Students would have access to the weight room and swimming pool, saving OPS money when building the school. The project will take over about 73 acres of land and allow 1,500 students to attend a school with a "university" atmosphere.  Some people in the crowd at Tuesday's meetings had concerns about other issues. They included street widening and the safety of young drivers.

Those who live nearby are in favor of the partnership. They believe it could save the district some money and get the community involved with the high school.

The district's goal is to have the project completed by the 2022 - 2023 school year.
