Poll shows Iowa's Third District candidates within two points

A new poll from Iowa’s Loras College shows Third Congressional District Republican candidate David Young is leading Democrat Staci Appel by just two points.

Appel and Young are vying for the seat currently held by Republican Tom Latham. Appel is a financial consultant and was an Iowa State Senator for four years. She says she wants to work on similar initiatives in Congress as she did in the State Senate, such as universal preschool.

“I did the statewide smoking ban, it became the strongest indoor and outdoor smoking ban in the country. I led the way and we were first in the nation to pass equal pay for equal work, and I helped reorganize state government. I led the way there, I was chair of state government, we hadn’t reorganized state government for 25 years.”

David Young was Chief of Staff to U.S. Senator Charles Grassley for seven years. Young says he’s seen a shift in what issues matter to Iowans---it’s not just economic security, immigration, and Obamacare.

“Now you see things like ISIS, and terrorism pop up again in the forefront, and Ebola and our health security as well. What I hear from Iowans is that they’re optimistic but they’re frustrated, and they’re concerned about the direction of this country, and they’re concerned about the federal government trying to do too much.”

Last month’s Loras College poll had Appel leading the 3rd District race by 6 points. The current poll has a margin of error of 5.85 percent. It shows 10 percent of 3rd District voters are undecided.

Appel’s campaign issued a statement Monday saying “If David Young is delusional enough to believe that he has somehow pulled ahead after going dark on TV and entering the final stretch massively in debt, he’s clearly lost his grip on reality during his 20 years in Washington.”

Appel has $200,000 more than her opponent going in to the final week before the election.

Filings with the FEC as of October 15th show Appel has more than $246,000 cash on hand. Young has $30,000 cash on hand.
