Wind chills are expected to remain below zero in much of Iowa and Nebraska and fire officials say the bitterly cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and break.
Business and homeowners are being advised to protect against freezing pipes by keeping the thermostat at or above 55 degrees.
It's also advised to make sure heat is flowing to rooms with plumbing fixtures like bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms.
And insulate pipes in unheated areas and open doors and cabinets to expose pipes to warmer air.
