Sex Trafficking in Nebraska is topic of Science Cafe tonight

Tonight’s Omaha Science Café focuses on Sex Trafficking in Nebraska.

Dr. Shireen Rajaram, an associate professor of health promotion, social and behavioral health in the College of Public Health at UNMC is the featured speaker.

Rajaram says she will be joined by two sex trafficking survivors.

She says tonight’s presentation will give background statistics on the problem of sex trafficking in Nebraska, hopefully raise awareness of the issue and give those attending, pointers on what they can do to help.

Rajaram says though it’s a hidden issue, sex trafficking is happening in Nebraska.

"People are not aware of it and when people are not aware of it they just think it’s not happening and that only helps for the problem to exist and proliferate and for the women to suffer even more.  And for us not to be able to reach out to them and provide services to help them get up and get back on their feet.”

Rajaram co-authored a qualitative study on Nebraska sex trafficking survivors with Sriyani Tidball of UNL.  During the Science Café tonight, Rajaram will share some of the data the two collected after interviewing 22 sex trafficking survivors.

The Omaha Science Café starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th Street.  More information is available at unmc.edu/sciencecafe.
