UNMC Cancer Center project on budget and on schedule

A $323 million cancer center at UNMC is set to open in the spring of 2017.

UNMC officials updated the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center progress during a meeting Thursday of the Board of Regents. Dr. Ken Cowan, Director of the Cancer Center, says it’ll create thousands of jobs.

"The goal is to have this cancer facility recruit an additional 1,200 new jobs to our campus, both in physicians, researchers, research staff, students, clinical staff, and to have a net increase, and that’s conservative, to be 75 to 100 million dollars a year within five to 10 years after completion."

The 575,000 square foot Cancer Center will include a research tower, 100 new laboratories, and 108 cancer hospital in-patient beds. A 200,000 square foot outpatient center is also part of the project.
