UNMC, Nebraska Medicine, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital form partnership

UNMC and Nebraska Medicine are partnering with Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital on a new program.

The physical medicine and rehabilitation program will begin in late 2016 or early 2017. It’ll bring the two medical operations together for research, a residency program, and expanded care for patients needing rehabilitation services.

Marsha Lommel, president and CEO of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, says technology and research are important components of the partnership.

“I’ve been the CEO of Madonna for 25 years now, and it has been a goal to finally establish a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation in Nebraska,” Lommel says. “This partnership will make that dream a reality.”

The partnership means doctors specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation will be involved in a patient’s care before they’re transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.

Dr. Bradley Britigan, Dean of UNMC’s College of Medicine, says the program addresses a need in the medical school.

“One of the difficulties in order to meet those challenges is to have a partner who has the clinical facilities and the expertise to help guide that training experience. And fortunately, particularly with the arrival of Madonna in Omaha, we have found that partner.”

The Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Omaha is currently under construction, with a projected opening in late fall 2016. The new program will begin around that time as well.
