UNMC researcher studying new model for care of Alzheimer's patients and their families

Researchers at UNMC and the University of California San Francisco are studying a new model of care for Alzheimer’s patients and their families.

An estimated 40,000 Nebraskans will suffer from Alzheimer’s disease by 2025. The model is called Dementia Care Ecosystem. Dr. Stephen Bonasera, associate professor of medicine at UNMC, is one of the researchers. He says each family enrolled in the study will have a navigator.

Dr. Bonasera says the navigator will work with families on an individual plan that includes what medications the patient is taking, and how caregivers can take care of themselves while also caring for a loved one.

“We work with the families to talk about issues in terms of what a person’s caregiving would look like when they get so impaired do they want to have CPR, do they want to have all sorts of measures for life extension. We work with families to determine what are their preferences for that before emergencies occur, so in a proactive way.”

Dr. Bonasera says the goal is to improve the quality of life for patients and their families through a supportive virtual care system. He says they also want to reduce emergency room visits and incidences of medication reactions.

The study is funded by a $10 million grant from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Dr. Bonasera says up to 900 families can participate in the study, and more are needed.
