(Update) Flood Displacing Families, This is How You Can Help

(Update on Red Cross Donation Contact Information)

OMAHA, Neb. -- Thousands of people in Nebraska and Iowa are in need of assistance as flooding displaces families, destroys homes and devastates communities. In response, numerous charities have created funds.  United Way of the Midlands has created the Nebraska & Iowa Flood Relief Fund, www.unitedwaymidlands.org/floodrelief or texting FLOODRELIEF to 41444. 100% of every donation will be directed to nonprofit programs meeting people’s needs for emergency shelter, food and more right here in our community. Donors can direct their gift to another community affected by flooding in Nebraska or Iowa by providing the city name.

United Way of the Midlands is also assisting those affected by flooding through its 2-1-1 Helpline which serves Nebraska and southwest Iowa.

The American Red Cross of Nebraska & Southwest Iowa is encouraging residents who want to help others during these floods to donate to their relief fund.

"Your gift enables us to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters," the organization tweeted Thursday.

To make a gift to Red Cross Disaster Relief:

  • “#NebraskaStrong Drive for Flood Relief”
  • Call 1-844-278-8555
  • Text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation

The Salvation Army is also collecting donations to go toward flood relief efforts. Crews are working in the shelters in Norfolk, Nebraska and Sioux City, Iowa, organizing supplies in Fort Dodge, Iowa and organizing volunteers and supply transport in Omaha.
The organization is assisting at relief shelters and organizing donations to be distributed to evacuees. They are also organizing flood-cleanup kits and preparing for weekend flood possibilities.
