The VNA Opens Flu Clinics This Week

Beginning today (Monday) the VNA is opening its flu vaccination clinics.

The VNA offices are open Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The CDC recommends everyone six months of age and older receive a vaccination each year.

Cindy Ruma, Immunization Coordinator for the VNA, says new this year, the VNA will offer flu immunizations at area Walmart locations.

Ruma reminds people there are two ways to get vaccinated.

"You can get the old fashioned shot in the arm. That’s the typical vaccine. Healthy people, ages 2-49 can get the flu mist.  It’s actually a great way to get your vaccine.  It works a little bit more quickly in just under two weeks.  And it’s actually just a bit more effective than the shot.”

Ruma says some preventative measures you can take to fight the flu include washing your hands regularly, sneezing or coughing into your elbow and contacting your doctor right away as soon as you think you have the flu.

She says anti-virals taken within the first 48 hours of contracting the flu lessen the severity and duration of the illness.
